2009 - 2010 Season Preview
The ATC Knights will face one of their toughest schedules ever as they mark the beginning of the program’s 16th season and the 6th season in NJCAA Division 1. Coach Bruce Capers, now in his 6th season as head coach, has a combined record of 106 wins and 56 losses.
Expecting to improve from last season with its season-ending injuries to two key players, Capers says he is excited about having returning players and both he and team members have worked hard this summer to return to their winning ways.
“We have established a high standard for our program at ATC and we are going to work to keep the high level of respect that we earned in our conference and district. We are going to work to continue to gain more and more respect on a national level,” according to Capers. “Our goal is to prepare ourselves to be winners in life, in the classroom, in the community, and on the court.”
The 2009-10 season will be a challenge, facing tough opponents from Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. Bolstering the coaching efforts will be four returning players: Dajuwan Carter, Antrjuan Albright, Khiry Clarke and Darnell Davis.
Adding their talents to this core group will be sophomore Jerel Stephenson, a versatile player transferring from the University of North Carolin at Wilmington. Capers is also proud of notable signees Winford Ivey, Mario Faris and Kirtrell Dixon. "This is a talented team with a lot of versatility. If they form a bond and develop the true concept of a team, the sky is the limit for them," said Assistant Coach Fred Summers.
Coach Capers added, "The 2009 Knights have good size, athleticism and quickness -they remind me of the 2007 team that made it to the national tournament."
The Knights open the season at home with challenges against Gulf Coast Community College on November 6 and Central Florida Community College on November 7.
Capers, a former Harlem Globetrotter, continues to be excited about the opportunities at ATC. In just five seasons, 21 players have graduated and another 25 out of 32 ATC basketball players have earned the opportunity to further their athletic careers at four-year colleges and universities. The program has produced three NJCAA All-American players in five seasons.
