Recovery of their winning ways is in full swing after posting a 10-20 record during the 08-09 season. The "injury" word crept its way into the team's dialogue this past season when 6'7" forward Mark Harp tore his ACL in the first half of the year and forward/center Darnell Davis suffered a broken hand in the very first game. Capers said he was unhappy about the injuries of two of his key players, but he fully expected his younger players to step up and fill the shoes of their teammates. "That did not happen, and our season record suffered, said Capers. But over 4 seasons, Capers winning ways are evident with 106 wins and 56 losses.
While team goals did not meet expectations, individual goals were achieved. Lance James and Robert Praylo, both combo guards, will be furthering their playing careers. James will be sharing neighborhoods with a more famous James -"King" LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers as he has signed a letter of intent to play at Cleveland State University on the shores of Lake Erie. While playing here at ATC, James racked up the rewards as he was named NJCAA Region 10 Player of the Year, to the first team All-Region squad and became the third ATC player in five years to be named an All-American player. Praylo chose a 4-year school a little closer to Aiken, settling on Georgia College and State University where he will play for the next two years.
A former Harlem Globetrotter, Coach Capers continues to be excited about the opportunities for basketball at ATC. "In my four years at ATC, 16 players have graduated and twelve players have gone on to further their playing careers at 4-year colleges and universities. Five players have earned basketball scholarships to NCAA Division-1 level schools and 9 to NCAA Division-2 level schools.
"We have established a high standard for our program at ATC and we are going to work hard to keep the high level of respect that we earned in our conference and district. We are going to work to continue to gain more and more respect on a national level," said Capers. He added, "Our goal is to prepare ourselves to be winners in life, in the classroom, in the community and on the court."
