Coach Bruce Capers
Bruce Capers
Position: Head Coach
Experience: 3rd Year
ATC Record: 68-32
A native of Savannah, Ga., Bruce Capers is in his third season as Head Men's Basketball Coach and Director of Student Life at Aiken Technical College.
In Capers' first three seasons, the ATC Knights had an overall record of 68 wins and 32 losses. In 2006 and 2007, they were Region 10 champions. In 2007, the Knights were also Region 10 Tournament champions, District 3 champions and earned a National Tournament appearance. Coach Capers was named Region 10 coach of the year in 2006 and 2007. Capers was also named 2007 District 3 Coach of the year. He believes in continuously building character, academic standing, and a winning tradition in his students at ATC.
Coach Capers' basketball background began as an All-City high school player at A.E. Beach High School in Savannah, Ga. He then accepted a basketball scholarship at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, where he was a member of 1982 NJCAA Region 17 State Championship Team and made a NJCAA national tournament appearance in his freshman season. As a sophomore he was selected All-Conference, Team Captain, MVP, and defensive player of the year.
Capers' journey moved on to Berry College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology. While at Berry, he was also named All-GIAC, All-District 25, MVP, and Secretary of Defense.
From 1989-1997, Capers played for the Harlem Globetrotters and served as the team's Director of Marketing.
Coach Capers' coaching career began at Abraham Baldwin from 1997-2000 as the Assistant Head Coach, where he compiled a record of 55 wins and 42 losses with a NJCAA Region 17 championship appearance in his final season. Capers served as Head Coach at Atkinson County High School in 2001, where he led the Rebels to a Region Championship and Sweet Sixteen appearance in the state tournament, and earned the Atlanta Tip-Off Club GHSA All-Region Coach of the Year.
Capers also earned the Degree of Master of Education at Valdosta State University in 2002.
Coach Donquell Sims
Donquell Sims
Position: Assistant Coach
Experience: 3rd year
Donquell T. Sims is in his second year as Assistant Basketball Coach and Director of Basketball Operations, replacing Sam Ward.
Mr. Sims began his basketball career at Lucy C. Laney High School in Augusta, where he started at point guard for three years, winning numerous most valuable player (MVP) and All-area honors. He went on to attend Stillman College, where he was recognized as an Academic All-American for Historically Black Colleges.
Mr. Sim's personal motto of “excuses are monuments that build bridges that lead to nowhere” has served him well as he graduated cum laude with a degree in health and physical education from Stillman.
Coach Donquell Sims
Charles Welch
Position: Assistant Coach
Experience: 14th year
After a three year absence from the sidelines Coach Charles Welch just could not stay away any longer and returns to assist and learn from Head Coach Bruce Capers for the 2007-2008 season.
“I have really missed the game and am so grateful to Coach Capers for allowing me to have a role on this team," Coach Welch said. "I have developed a tremendous sense of respect for Coach Capers and what he has accomplished for Knight Basketball in these last three years. I am looking forward to having a chance to develop a greater understanding of the game as I draw on his experiences. I hope that some of my own experience will be an asset to this team as they compete for another Championship.”
Coach Welch was the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at ATC from 1991 to 2004.
