NRC Awards $150,000
to Aiken Technical College

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) awarded ATC a $150,000 grant July 1 to further develop the College's popular radiation protection technology program.

Over the next two years ATC will use these funds to buy equipment: specifically pumps, valves, motors, piping and measuring instruments. These items will be used in training radiation protection technology technicians.

"This grant will provide the resources necessary to complete our curriculum design and insure that each standard and requirement is implemented throughout our curriculum," said Tracy Pierner, Dean of Technical Education.

ATC's share is part of the NRC's Nuclear Education Grant Program, a $4.7 million project under the 2005 Energy Policy Act. The program funds colleges and universities around the country to promote "nuclear safety, security and environmental protection" education. ATC is the only Nuclear Energy Institute affiliated college in the southeast with ties to NRC and the U.S. Department of Energy.
