Instructor Patrick Green
Patrick Green
Instructor: English
When Patrick Green tells a story, you can bet his students are listening. They know a natural storyteller when they hear one.
Green, an English instructor who joined Aiken Technical College in 2004, recently launched his second novel. Son Down — a wrenching tale of one man's battle between faith and reality — received positive advance reviews from Charlotte Magazine and Lounge, among others. It appeared in bookstores in May 2006.
A native of Petticoat Junction, Green began writing when he was still in grade school. He had always enjoyed stringing ideas together, but words became more important to him when he and a fellow student began a friendly rivalry.
"Around fourth grade, a friend and I were so competitive that we competed in everything," Green said. "When we were assigned to write a short story in class, I always tried to write the best story. I aimed for emotional reactions. A laugh. A moan. If I didn't get the audience to react, I was disappointed."
Once he started college, the complexities of storytelling became even more alluring. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a concentration in journalism from the College of Charleston and a Masters in Education with a concentration in English from Troy State University.
Then he put his talents to work, becoming a sports writer for the Augusta Chronicle in Augusta, Ga., and the Post and Courier in Charleston. He also appeared on several television and radio broadcasts with journalistic commentary.
But writing for newspapers was not enough to satisfy Green's need to tell a good story. After meticulously creating a plot and an assortment of memorable characters, Green wrote and independently published Josie's Missing Syllabus, a work that became a regional success.
Now that he is an English instructor at ATC, Green uses his storytelling ability to help his students learn more about what makes an author. He teaches composition and African American literature, among other courses.
"As an author, I can help my students learn to pay attention to detail in their own work," he said. "I like to promote a sense of enthusiasm, and I try to teach them how to be more creative."
