Department Chair, Amy Capers
Amy Capers
Department Chair
Program Coordinator, Allied Health
Expanded-Duty Dental Assisting
“Once I got into it, I was fascinated,” she said. “It was so cool. It was a way I could contribute to other people’s well being. To this day, I am absolutely fascinated with advances in dentistry.”
Amy became a dental assistant before moving on to become a dental hygenist, educating patients on the impact of good oral hygene on over-all health. She earned her Associate of Science degree from Midlands Technical College and her Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University.
She broadened her career in 1990, when she became an instructor at Aiken Technical College. She was instrumental in getting the College’s dental program accredited by the American Dental Association on Dental Accreditation.
Amy now serves as Aiken Technical College’s Allied Health Department Chair and Dental Assistant Program Coordinator. She makes the most of her hands-on lab in ATC's Health and Science Building, which functions as a dentist's office would.
"I believe students learn better with hands-on training," she said. "You can read about a subject all day, but you don't know what it really is until you do it!"
In every class, Amy stresses the importance of life-long learning, which is particularly important in an evolving field such as dentistry.
"Dentistry is constantly advancing," she said. "You have to keep up if you want to be successful — and that goes for any profession. You have to find your path and keep on going, all the way."
