What did you think about this camp experience?
I thought it was pretty cool because we just learned a lot about programming, and it was just the experience I've never really got to have before. …it just kind of really helped start up my experience in programming.

What do you want to do when you grow up?
Oh, I'm not really sure yet. I'm definitely interested in really anything that has to do with math. So, I mean, programming does have a lot of math-related things in it. So, anything with programming, math, engineering, pretty much in that that category.

What would you say is the best thing you learned throughout this experience?
I can write my own games now. I think, in my opinion, what the best thing I learned and the most useful thing is that …I'm starting to just write my own things (codes). Just making like a game, my own game, without any help, which just kind of is the coolest thing to make. Yeah, it's pretty cool.

<dc:identifier>5c4e4aba-dc49-43d5-ab74-0c18a782eb68-4222</dc:identifier>

Nikasha N Dicks

Fall 2025 ARISE New Student Info Sessions

ARISE New Student Information Sessions are held in-person on the Aiken Tech campus. “My program of study at Aiken Tech equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to excel in the field of accounting. From comprehensive coursework to hands-on projects and internships, I gained a solid foundation in accounting principles, financial analysis, and professional ethics,” Brock said.

Brock was very involved in student engagement and community service as well. She served as president of the Student Government Association, volunteered as a tutor, organized and volunteered for food drives, was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and served as a student ambassador.

“Reflecting on my experience at Aiken Technical College, I am grateful for the opportunities and support that have shaped my academic and personal growth. The college provided a welcoming and supportive environment where I could pursue my passion for learning and prepare for a successful future in my chosen field,” Brock said.

She plans to continue her education at Purdue University and Post University to expand her knowledge and expertise in accounting. Brock also aspires to pursue professional certifications such as the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation to enhance her credentials and career prospects.

Aiken Technical College played a role in setting the foundation for her future.

Why did you choose to attend Aiken Tech?

Aiken Tech often offers flexible class schedules, including evening, weekend, and online courses, allowing me to balance my education with work or other responsibilities. Many of Aiken Tech's programs are designed to prepare students for specific careers or industries. I found programs tailored to my career goals. With smaller class sizes, I benefited from more personalized attention from instructors. This enhanced my learning experience and provided opportunities for mentorship and networking.

Why did you choose your current program of study?

Overall, I chose accounting as a major to provide myself with a solid foundation for a successful and rewarding career, offering stability, growth opportunities, and the chance to make a meaningful impact in the business world. Accounting involves complex problem-solving and critical thinking. Studying accounting equipped me with valuable skills such as financial analysis, budgeting, auditing, and problem-solving. These skills are transferable and can be applied in various professional contexts. An accounting degree can open doors to a wide range of career opportunities in various industries. Almost every organization, whether it's a multinational corporation, a non-profit organization, or a small business, requires accounting professionals to manage their finances.

What's next for you after graduation?

I've accepted a position as an Accounts Receivable Specialist at Cold Creek Nurseries. Additionally, I'm planning to further my education at both Purdue University and Post University, pursuing legal studies for my bachelor's degree and later my Master of Business degree.

What are your ultimate career goals? How has your education at Aiken Tech prepared you for your future?

I aim to leverage my expertise in financial management, auditing, and strategic planning to contribute to the success and growth of the company I work for.

My education at Aiken Technical College has prepared me well for my future career in accounting. The rigorous coursework provided me with a strong foundation in accounting principles, financial analysis, and relevant software applications. Additionally, the hands-on learning experiences and practical projects helped me develop critical thinking skills and problem-solving abilities essential for navigating real-world accounting challenges.

Furthermore, the supportive faculty and resources at Aiken Tech have equipped me with the knowledge and confidence to pursue further education and professional certifications, such as the CPA designation.

<dc:identifier>5c4e4aba-dc49-43d5-ab74-0c18a782eb68-4008</dc:identifier>

Shakailah C Banks

Aiken Tech student wins $1,000 NISOD student essay contest

Aiken Technical College student Mickyzjha Moore is one of three national winners of the $1,000 NISOD student essay contest and was recently recognized during the organization’s international conference in Austin, Texas.

Moore was one of three winners from over 150 entries. Aiken Tech Early Childhood Education instructor Lynda Altman and Patsy Fields, the college’s National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development (NISOD) representative, accompanied Moore at the International Conference on Teaching and Leadership Excellence in late May.

Moore’s winning essay, “The Nonlinear Path,” is a testament to her resilience and determination. It delves into her journey of battling mental health and depression, a story that is sure to inspire others.

“I know I can succeed in my courses because Mrs. Altman has always believed in me. I am diligent in my studies because of the guidance she gives me,” Moore stated. “Due to her support, I went from a college dropout to a student who maintains a high GPA and has an invitation to join Phi Theta Kappa. I could not have accomplished that if she had not encouraged me to continue attending college. Although my academic journey has not been linear, because of Mrs. Altman, I am on the path to graduation.”

The NISOD is dedicated to empowering community and technical college faculty, administrators, and staff. Their mission is to foster professional growth, strive for excellence, make a significant impact, and gain recognition.

Building trust and forming a bond with Altman is what helped Moore succeed in her studies and keep fighting.

“Through honesty, I could speak with my academic advisor and Early Childhood Education instructor, Lynda Altman, about my insecurities. Her advice and guidance have been instrumental in helping me continue my education at Aiken Technical College. Furthermore, I excel in my courses due to Mrs. Altman’s guidance.”

Altman’s knowledge of early childhood education theorists “ignited a motivation” for Moore to learn more about the inner workings of children’s minds. This helped her choose her career path in education psychology.

Three scholarships were awarded, and students were required to apply and respond to several questions about why they want to be medical assistants and the most important thing they want to possess as an MA. This statewide scholarship opportunity awarded Aiken Tech's SMAA students all three scholarships.

The following students won scholarships: Erin Willis-Franklin, SMAA President; Jennifer Shelton, embedded tutor for the MA program and general studies/general education; and Monica Riley, SMAA Treasurer.

Members also competed in a trivia game called the Bowl of Knowledge. Faith Salyers and Litzy Alonso, two members of Aiken Tech, were on the winning team.

Students were required to attend the first-timer's reception. At the reception, there was a scavenger hunt to get signatures from different officers and members of the South Carolina Society of Medical Assistants. A winner was drawn for free registration for the SCSMA Conference next year. The winner was Aiken Techs, Angel Ellis, SMAA Vice President.

Leaders of the two institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding that promotes and facilitates the transfer of academic credit from Aiken Tech to USC Aiken for students pursuing bachelor’s degrees in STEM and other in-demand areas.

“USC Aiken is committed to providing graduates with a high return on investment by preparing them for careers in the region’s fastest growing and highest paying fields,” said USC Aiken Chancellor Dan Heimmermann. “As regional partners working to advance the economic prosperity of our communities, we’re excited to offer a pathway in partnership with Aiken Tech that enhances our state’s workforce and the overall well-being of our graduates.”

Aiken Tech students will have the opportunity to earn their associate’s degree at Aiken Tech, then receive accelerated admission to transfer those credits into six available USC Aiken programs to earn their bachelor’s degree. The bachelor’s degree programs include biology, chemistry, applied computer science (cybersecurity concentration), environmental earth systems, exercise and sports science (allied health concentration), and psychology – areas important to South Carolina’s current and future workforce needs.

“In the spirit of providing greater educational opportunities for the students of South Carolina, we want to collectively ensure every Aiken Tech student who transfers to USC Aiken will seamlessly earn their bachelor's degree,” said Aiken Tech President Forest Mahan.

According to the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, bachelor’s degree holders are half as likely to be unemployed as their peers who hold only a high school degree, and they will earn an average $1.2 million in additional earnings over their lifetime.

Students interested in one of the pathways will be co-advised by staff at Aiken Tech and USC Aiken to ensure a seamless transition and provide students with a more concise roadmap of courses required for transfer.

The partnership becomes effective on the first day of the Fall 2023 semester and will be jointly reviewed annually by leaders at both institutions.

<dc:identifier>5c4e4aba-dc49-43d5-ab74-0c18a782eb68-3820</dc:identifier>

Shakailah C Banks

2023 Foundation Scholarship Breakfast

On February 28, Aiken Technical College Foundation (ATC Foundation) hosted its first scholarship breakfast since 2019.

“It was wonderful to celebrate both the achievements of Aiken Tech’s scholarship recipients and the generous donors who make them possible. The event has not been held since 2019 due to COVID-19, and it’s a way to connect the community and donors to the students whose lives they are making a tremendous difference in,” said ATC Foundation Director Beth LaClair, Ph.D.

During the 2022-2023 academic year, there were 130 scholarships awarded to students, totaling more than $125,000.
Award recipients Lillian Brock, Brodee Stewart, and Ismat Hasan spoke at the breakfast. There were roughly 75 recipients, family and faculty and staff in attendance.

Hasan, the Sand River Women’s Club Scholarship recipient, mentioned in her speech the reason the ATC Foundation scholarships are so important to older students like herself is because it “takes a lot of planning and juggling to even attempt going back to school”. The scholarship and support from the foundation and organizations she is involved in made it possible to return.

“I was very fortunate to be awarded a scholarship through the Sand River Women’s Club for students who have chosen to go back to school after a gap. Receiving this scholarship reaffirmed my decision to come back to a technical degree program. Right then, I knew that I was on the right track. The next scholarship I received during the summer was through the South Carolina Nurse’s Association Foundation,” Hasan said.

Stewart, the Citizens for Nuclear Technology Awareness scholarship recipient, explained the scholarship makes it “more possible and a lot easier” for the students to take care of other responsibilities by having classes paid for.

“The scholarship impacted me by not having to stress too much about the financial aspect of school. That’s what scares people when you are in school, is how they are going to provide for your family and go to school full-time...,” Stewart said.

A limited number of program-specific scholarships will be available for the 2023-2024 academic year in the summer and will be found on the foundation’s website. Scholarship applications for the 2024-2025 academic year will open at the beginning of next year.

When your point total reaches more than 12, your driver’s license will be automatically suspended. The state requires you to surrender your license to the DMV within a certain time period, or you will face hefty fines and possible jail time.

If you’ve had points added to your driver’s license due to driving violations you can remove up to four points with this course, which can only be taken once every three years.

This 8 hour course will be held in room 803 A&B. The cost of the course is $95, and a textbook will need to be purchased for this course.
