Overview
The Medical Assisting Certificate program prepares students to become multi-skilled healthcare professionals who play a vital role in supporting physicians and other healthcare providers in a variety of clinical settings. Medical assistants are uniquely trained to perform both administrative and clinical duties, making them an essential part of today’s healthcare team.
Students develop hands-on skills in patient care and medical office operations, including assisting with exams and procedures, performing basic lab work, administering medications, and managing records and scheduling. The program combines classroom learning, lab experience, and a supervised clinical externship, preparing graduates to work in settings such as physician offices, clinics, and urgent care centers. Students will be required to participate in off-campus training at clinical facilities; therefore, students will need reliable transportation, since assigned clinical sites are off campus.
Students applying for the Medical Assistant Certificate program must complete a separate application after being admitted to the college. There are additional requirements in order to qualify for admission to this program. The admission criteria are updated annually and students should review the current information for changes in the admissions process. Information packets detailing the application process for each admission program can be downloaded from the ATC website or are available on the ATC website. In addition, upon program admission, the student must complete a physical exam, provide proof of immunizations, pass a background check, pass a drug screen check and have student liability insurance.
The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB). Graduates of a CAAHEP-accredited program are eligible to sit for the CMA (AAMA) national certification examination administered by the American Association of Medical Assistants, which is considered the gold standard for medical assisting credentials.
