Overview
The Medical Coding Certificate program prepares students to become health information professionals responsible for translating medical documents into standardized diagnostic and procedural codes used for reimbursement, data reporting, and healthcare analytics.
Students develop the skills needed to review and analyze medical records and accurately assign codes using nationally recognized classification systems, including ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS Level II. These coding systems support healthcare reimbursement, quality reporting, compliance, and data collection across a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, physician offices, outpatient centers, and other healthcare facilities.
Graduates of the program are prepared to sit for the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification examination administered by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The CCS credential is widely recognized by employers and demonstrates advanced competency in hospital- and physician-based coding. Graduates may also pursue additional AHIMA credentials and microcredentials as they continue their professional development.
Students applying to the Medical Coding program must complete a separate application after being admitted to the college. There are additional requirements in order to qualify for admission to this program. The admission criteria are updated annually, and students should review the current information for changes in the admissions process.

The Medical Coding Certificate program is offered fully online, providing flexibility for students balancing work, family, and other responsibilities. Most general education courses required for the certificate are also available online, allowing students to complete the program from virtually anywhere while engaging with faculty and classmates through an interactive learning environment.
