Aiken Tech to offer tower technician training course this fall
Skilled, certified tower technicians are critical in supporting the telecommunications industry. As 5G, broadband, and fiber projects expand and increase, so does the need for this workforce.
“These projects allow employment for skilled tower technicians to build, upgrade, and maintain cell towers, antennas, and related equipment,” said Aiken Technical College Director of Continuing Education Athena Freeman. “The current pool of trained tower technicians is small and does not meet the demand.”
To help address this workforce need, Aiken Tech is offering a certified tower technician course from October 13-25.
The short-term course is no-cost for eligible South Carolina residents. Others may still enroll for a fee of $5,000.
During the 12-day course, students will cover topics including telecommunications regulations and standards, worksite hazard awareness, rigging, LTE installation, and basic electricity. Students will also participate in tower climbing activities to incorporate skills learned in the classroom setting.
In addition to the tower technician certification, students who successfully complete the program will earn first aid/CPR and OSHA-10 certifications.
Those interested in enrolling should contact Aiken Tech’s Office of Continuing Education at (803) 508-7342 or phillipse2@atc.edu. Participants must:
