Aiken Technical College Launches New 12-Day Tower Technician Training Program

Program to be free for the first 12 qualified applicants

The country is rapidly advancing toward 5G technologies, increasing the wireless industry’s need for trained tower technicians. Such positions are projected to grow in South Carolina about 11 percent by 2026, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.

Aiken Technical College has partnered with Warriors 4 Wireless to offer a 12-day, certified tower technician course to help meet this growing need. The class will meet March 9 through March 21, with the exception of March 15.

“Advancement in the wireless technology to the 5G network has created an increased demand for tower technicians to support the growth of this industry,” said Dr. Steven F. Simmons, dean of technical and continuing education. “Aiken Technical College is pleased to offer students the opportunity to train and earn the required certifications to enter this lucrative field.”

Thanks to state funding, the course will be free for the first 12 qualified applicants. To be considered for the program, applicants must:

  • Be a South Carolina resident
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have at least a high school diploma or GED (documentation will be required)
  • Be eligible to work in the United States
  • Be physically able to carry a body harness weighing 70 pounds
  • Be committed to completing the program

During the course, students will participate in classroom lectures and gain practical experience by climbing the College’s 90-foot tall towers. They will also earn several industry-recognized credentials such as OSHA 10, First Aid CPR, and Authorized Climber.

“Developing the knowledge, skills, and ability to safely perform the duties of a tower technician is extremely important. This program focuses on practical applications to ensure graduates are prepared to enter the workforce,” said Simmons.

Applications are being accepted for the program. To apply or for more information, contact Patricia Whitfield at (803) 508-7362 or whitfiep@atc.edu.
