New SRS Leader to be the Keynote Speaker for 2018 Commencement Ceremony

Michael D. Budney, Manager of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Savannah River Operations Office, will be the keynote speaker for the 2018 Aiken Technical College Commencement ceremony Tuesday, May 8.

The ceremony, which will be held at the USC Aiken Convocation Center, will begin at 7 p.m.

Budney was appointed to his current position in February leading a workforce of about 11,000 government and contract personnel at the Savannah River Site. Prior to his current role, he served as the Director of the Office of Business Operations in the DOE Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

He also served in the U.S. Navy for 29 years and has a bachelor’s degree in physics from the U.S. Naval Academy, Master of Science degree in electrical engineering from the Navy Postgraduate School, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Maryland University College.

Nearly 400 students have been approved for graduation and will receive a combined total of 455 credentials including certificates, diplomas and associate degrees.

This will be the first time in a number of years that the College will host a single ceremony to celebrate all graduates.

“Commencement is an opportunity to celebrate our graduates and their accomplishments. Over the years, our ceremonies have grown, thus the need for the two ceremonies we’ve had in the past,” said Dr. Forest E. Mahan, ATC President. “This year, we are glad to partner with USC Aiken to host our ceremony in a larger space that accommodates our growth and allows graduates to celebrate reaching this milestone with all of their classmates and friends in front of their families and supporters.”

The College and the ATC Foundation will also recognize the 2017-18 Faculty Member of the Year and Staff Member of the Year. Awardees are nominated by employees and students and selected by a committee.

The commencement ceremony is open to the public and tickets are not required for attendance.
