Student Spotlight: Alexis Spann
Leading By Example
Perseverance and service have shaped Alexis Spann’s educational journey.
Spann is currently enrolled in the Associate in Applied Science: Nursing program and is working toward becoming a two-time alumna of Aiken Technical College and a three-time college graduate. In 2017, she earned her Medical Assisting Certificate from Aiken Tech, and in 2022, she earned a bachelor’s in healthcare studies from the Medical University of South Carolina.
“I’ve always been kind of a go-getter,” Spann said.
Having always been interested in becoming a nurse, she decided to return to Aiken Tech to pursue her RN degree with the encouragement and support of her husband. Doing so also sets an example for their children that there are different routes to pursuing their goals, Spann said.
“It’s important to me to show them that just because you’re delayed doesn’t mean you’re denied. You can still go after what you want. You may be on hold for a little while, but you can still go and get it,” she said.
Spann is also focused on helping others along the way.
She serves as a Campus Ambassador, a member of the Student Nurses Association, a peer mentor with the Armor Up program, and a class representative. In the community, she’s actively involved with Jack and Jill of America, Inc.—Aiken County Chapter.
“It’s important to help others through service, and people cling to me as though I am a leader. I don’t proclaim to be one, but I’m also not going to let people be lost if they’re around me. We can figure it out together,” Spann said. “I just like to help people.”
Upon completing the associate degree nursing program, Spann plans to work in labor and delivery or women’s health, with a long-term goal of teaching the next generation of healthcare workers.
“It would be a full circle moment,” Spann said.
