Aiken Area Youth Forum to Introduce High School Seniors to Career Opportunities

(January 24, 2017, Aiken, SC)— Several organizations, including Aiken Technical College, have once again partnered to host the Lower Savannah Youth Forum on Wednesday, Jan. 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the Aiken Technical College campus.
Graduating seniors from Aiken and Barnwell counties who do not have a plan for after graduation will attend the forum. It is an opportunity “to expose them to college readiness and career preparation,” said Megan Sims, Workforce Development Youth Coordinator with the Lower Savannah Council of Governments, one of the partnering organizations.
In addition to ATC and LSCOG, other partners include South Carolina Department of Commerce, Regional Workforce Advisors South Carolina, SC Works Lower Savannah and American Job Center.
The theme for this year’s forum is “Your Career is Within Reach.”
“The event affords us an opportunity to interact with a large number of area high school seniors in hopes that many will choose to attend ATC in the fall,” said Melissa Johnson, ATC’s Director of Recruitment and Student Experience. “We want area students to know that a college education is indeed ‘within reach’ and that ATC is committed to their success.”
Attendees will hear from speakers including ATC academic deans and industry representatives who will discuss careers in health sciences, manufacturing and STEM, and information technology and cybersecurity.
“The Lower Savannah Workforce Development Area focuses on those career fields because a study was conducted in 2012 by Miller and Associates that showed those fields of study are demand-driven industries that are in need of a qualified workforce through 2022,” said Sims. “In addition, these are the career clusters that the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act can fund in our area.”
The keynote speaker for the event will be Scott A. McGregor, a global program manager with CISCO who is responsible for inclusion and collaboration and new hire orientation at the company. He is a 25-year-veteran of the IT industry.
