Nuclear Fundamentals Apprenticeship

Aiken Technical College has partnered with Savannah River Site (SRS) to offer the Nuclear Fundamentals Apprenticeship program. To participate, candidates must first apply to Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS), Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), and/or Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL). Applications are reviewed biannually in the fall and spring for the upcoming cohort. Selected candidates will be interviewed by the companies, and those chosen will be enrolled by their respective company into the Aiken Technical College Nuclear Fundamentals Certificate program. This initiative aims to provide comprehensive training and career opportunities in the nuclear industry.

Program Information

The LSE Production Operator Apprentice Program with Savannah River Nuclear Solutions (SRNS) is a limited-service employment position in which apprentices will be hired for a period of eight months to complete on-the-job training (OJT) and earn the Nuclear Fundamentals Certificate from Aiken Technical College (ATC) under the guidance of a qualified production operator or instructor. The program is designed to train apprentices on the production processes to perform at the Production Operator, Grade 16 level. The work schedule will consist of 20 hours per week of paid OJT at SRNS. There is no guarantee of future full-time employment upon completion of the program.

LSE Production Operator Apprentice Entry Requirements: 

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a valid state driver’s license
  • Must have completed ACT WorkKeys Skills Assessment and achieved a minimum score of two in Workplace Observation, three in Graphic Literacy or four in Locating Information (Graphic Literacy replaced Locating Information on October 1, 2017), and four in Applied Technology. Official results must be uploaded into BrassRing as a file attachment at the time the application is submitted online. Test scores must be within the last five years. Official documentation must be provided to the company for consideration of employment.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts

The Entry-level Production Operator Apprentice Program with Savannah River Remediation (SRR) trains on production processes to be able to eventually perform at the Production Operator, Grade 18 level. Both classroom and on-the-job training (OJT) will be provided. An Entry-level Production Operator Apprentice operates processes under the guidance of qualified Production or Sr. Production Operators.

The Entry-level Production Operator Apprentice (Grade 16) serves as the training position for Production Operator (Grade 18) positions. This Apprenticeship opportunity at SRR allows for applicants with little to no experience to receive on the job training so that they can qualify for a full time Production Operator position at the conclusion of their Apprenticeship. There is no guarantee of future full-time employment upon completion of the program.

Participants in the apprenticeship program are selected through a panel interview process. Those who successfully completes program training requirements will receive a Certificate of Completion of Apprenticeship as a Production Operator.
